The Sri Sathya Sai Organization is a spiritual organization that recognizes the fundamental unity of all religions around the world. The main objective of the Sri Sathya Sai Organization is to help individuals recognize their inner
divinity. It was founded by Sri Sathya Sai Baba in India.
The mission and purpose of Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s advent was outlined in a letter to his brother, Seshama Raju dated May 25, 1947. Some important excerpts from that letter are noted below:
The core unit of the Sri Sathya Sai Organization is the Sai Centre. At the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Scarborough, we promote spiritual, educational, and community service activities. We are a not-for-profit corporation registered in Ontario.
Our Chief Objectives
To study, learn, and disseminate the spiritual teachings of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, and to lead a life in accordance with those teachings.
To conduct study classes for the spiritual education of adults and children, incorporating the essential teachings common to all religions.
To provide service activities for the old, physically challenged, the sick, and the needy. These service activities include, but are not limited to, cleaning their apartments or houses, providing food for the needy, collecting and donating food items to institutions such as Food Banks, collecting and donating clothes for the needy, victims of natural and manmade disasters, organizing blood donor clinics, and tree planting in the community.
The initial activities of what would become the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Scarborough began in 1987 when a small group of devotees started gathering to conduct bhajans (devotional songs) at the apartment of one of those devotees. As this group of devotees grew, so did the group’s activities. Sai Spiritual Education (SSE) classes, then known as Bal Vikas classes, began with a handful of children. In 1989, the group registered as a Devotional Group with the Central Council of the Sri Sathya Sai Organization of Canada.
As more devotees started attending bhajans and SSE classes, a larger space with a bhajan hall and classrooms was needed. The Devotional Group subsequently moved its activities to Woburn Collegiate Institute. Shortly thereafter in 1990, the status of the Devotional Group changed to a Sai Centre and became the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Scarborough.
Spiritual, educational, and community service activities continued to grow and expand. The following three wings were formed pursuant to the Sri Sathya Sai Organization: Spiritual, Educare (Education), and Seva (Service), along with a special wing dedicated to Young Adults.
In 2002, devotees of the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Scarborough acquired land and subsequently constructed the Mandir (Building) with Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s blessings. The inauguration of the Mandir took place in 2011. The Mandir is the permanent home for all of the activities of the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Scarborough.
Sri Sathya Sai Organization
The main objective of the Sathya Sai Organization, which you must always keep before you is to help man to recognise the Divinity that is inherent in him”
– Sri Sathya Sai Baba, January 6, 1975
The main objective in helping individuals recognize their inner divinity is achieved through various means, including selfless service, self-transformation, and by practising the Five Universal Human Values outlined by Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
The Five Universal Human Values are:
The Sri Sathya Sai Organization operates on kinship and love within the organization. It also promotes and practices unity of faith and harmony of religions.
The Sri Sathya Sai Organization provides an environment to help foster an individual’s spiritual progress towards self-realization. Accordingly, every Sai Centre has the following major components:
The Spiritual Wing nurtures an individual’s spiritual growth to the path of devotion to God through bhajans, meditation, and the study of Sai literature.
The Educare Wing nurtures an individual’s self-transformation through SSE classes, Dynamic Value Parenting, and seminars/workshops.
Seva (Service) Wing
The Seva Wing nurtures an individual’s self-realization through Narayana Seva, blood donor clinics, and various other service activities.
The Youth Wing nurtures an individual’s self-confidence to build leadership skills and serve the community.
The above Wings correspond to the three major paths towards self-realization:
In addition, Sri Sathya Sai Baba has always encouraged Young Adults, as the potential leaders of tomorrow, to lead purposeful lives in service of their families, communities, and countries at large.
The Young Adult Wing at the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Scarborough is the fourth wing and provides a forum for Young Adults to discuss ideas and organize service activities amongst their peers.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba has also expressed that individuals should have love in thought, word, and deed.
“REAL equality among men has to be achieved not by the equal distribution of material things but by the cultivation of love, which promotes a sense of the divinity that is inherent in all beings.. More vital than the five pranas (Prana, Apaana, and others), Sathya, Dharma, Santhi, Prema and Ahimsa are the vital life-breath for every one. Of these the greatest is Prema (Love). Fill yourself with love. Love should express itself in service to society. You should look upon society this way. We exist for society and society exists for the good of all. Try to sanctify your life by doing service and spreading joy and comfort all around.”
~ Sri Sathya Sai Baba, December 11, 1985
